FRIDAY FUN: Cygnets & Second Chances

Remember that old Hans Christian Andersen story, The Ugly Duckling? You know. Unattractive, mud-ugly little cygnet turns into that most regal of waterfowl: a white swan. Well. This week’s edition of Friday Fun focuses on a cygnet songbird.

When a shy Scottish 47 year-old sauntered onto the stage of the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow for a 2009 audition on Britain’s Got Talent, nobody gave Susan Boyle the time of day. Her modest pre-performance introduction drew mostly incredulous smirks from both judges and the audience. A couple judges can barely contain their disdain.

Until the cygnet begins to sing. Boyle chose I Dreamed a Dream from Les Misérables:

If you’re still sitting down, better check your pulse.

Boyle has gone on to international fame – and a much better hair cut. Her debut album, I Dreamed a Dream, became the UK’s best-selling album of all time. As of 2013, Boyle had sold over 19 million albums worldwide and received two Grammy Awards nominations.

Just goes to show you. There are few truly ugly “ducklings.” Just those who need some time. And another chance.
